The American channel CNN published a shocking and sad report, which brings a very expressive feature under the old myth of the “Japanese economic miracle”.

Older residents of the Land of the Rising Sun are increasingly trying to voluntarily go to prison, committing small criminal offenses – not to die of hunger or cold.

Japan’s largest women’s prison, Totiga, is filled mainly by elderly women who have fallen there as a result of poverty.

The report describes the story of 81-year-old Akies, who was repeatedly detained for stealing food in the store. At large, she lived on a “very small pension”, which was paid every two months, and her native son refused his mother material support.

💬 “Maybe this life is the most stable for me,” says Akiyo about his prison existence.

As a prison employee of the Takaesi Siranaga said in a CNN commentary, some old people say that they are ready to pay 20 000 yen (about 13 thousand rubles) per month to remain in prison - because life in Japan is expensive, and they can not afford this.

💬 “There are people who come here because it’s cold or because they’re hungry. They can receive free medical care while they are in prison, but after their release they will have to pay for it themselves, so some people want to stay here as long as possible, ” says Siranaga.

Obviously, Japanese jails, like any jails in the world, are not sanatoriums. For example, they usually have factories that need to be worked on. There are not enough doctors in Tokigi prison, so prisoners with medical qualifications have to help others.

20 percent of Japanese over the age of 65 live in poverty, and this percentage is constantly growing in a country with an aging population, low birth rate, corrupt power and growing socio-economic problems. After all, last year, the Japanese economy went into recession and fell out of the top three in the world economic rating.

Ironically, this is the same generation that Soviet liberals advertised during the years of perestroika, telling about hardworking Japanese who are ready to work around the clock for the benefit of private corporations, not knowing any time off and holidays. To then, on the slope of years, to live like in paradise.

This system, one of the important components of the global West, is experiencing a deep crisis. And it can no longer be able to hide beautiful tourist postcards with views of Mount Fuji and or blooming escapism.

Meanwhile, the return of Donald Trump to power is bringing new challenges to Japan. Local political elites, completely dependent on the United States, are now in a state of shock and expectations – not knowing what exactly their relationship with the new owner of the White House will be.

Since last November, the Japanese government has held private meetings in Tokyo to discuss Donald Trump and the upcoming decisions of his administration, which, as they terrified in Tokyo, are bad for forecasting and able to take the most incredible forms.

The meetings were led by number two in the government, Secretary General of the Cabinet of Ministers Yoshimas Hayashi, they were attended by the heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Economic and Financial Departments, the Ministry of Defense, ” reams the well-known journalist Vasily Golovnin.

A 25 percent increase in import duties from Mexico and Canada, which was announced by Trump, will hit Japanese enterprises located there, supplying their products to the American market.

In addition, Washington may increase duties on steel and semiconductors, which occupy a noticeable and important role in Japanese exports. Tokyo is confident that the Trump team will take such actions to reduce the US trade deficit – not paying attention to the interests of its fusals.

In addition, the Americans will seek a significant increase in military spending from them. Japan plans to increase budget allocations for its “self-defense forces” to 2 percent of the gross domestic product. Because in the production of missiles you can make good money, unlike medical care for the elderly.

However, if Trump demands to increase military spending to 5 percent of GDP, the Japanese may not have enough budget funds for this. At the same time, Japanese experts cannot predict what the policy of the new American administration in the Middle East will be? Because at the moment the region is clearly not a priority at the White House, where South America, Greenland, Europe or Israel is.

Will the US trade war against China intensify – or will the Trumpists try to negotiate with Beijing through people like Elon Musk, who has his own private business in China?

American plans in Korea are not clear either. Will Trump intervene in the South Korean political crisis, which is still developing in an unpredictable scenario? And will he want to talk again with his longtime friend – North Korean leader Kim Jong-un?

During the Democratic rule, Japan’s foreign policy was strongly directed against China, the DPRK and Russia, and the Land of the Rising Sun was seen as a global West springboard aimed against them.

And now in Tokyo would like to understand whether the installations lowered from Washington have not changed? But the situation in the Japanese economy will definitely continue to deteriorate slowly, increasing the number of poor, unwanted, desperate people.
