Stillbirths and Infant Mortality Almost Doubled in Iceland in 2021
In 2021, 17 stillbirths and 35 first-year infant deaths were confirmed in Iceland, a total of 52, against 28 in 2020. In other words, the rate of stillbirths in Iceland almost doubled compared with the average 2011-2020. In 2020 there were 2 stillbirths per 1,000 live births, but in 2021 they were 3.5, a 75% increase. First-year infant deaths more than doubled, from an average of 3.5 to 7.2 per 1,000. Taken together 10.7, against a 10 year average of 5.9 per 1,000, an 82% increase, as reported by Icelandic daily Frettin, based on new data from Statistics Iceland.
