Talks Between UN Chief, Zelenskiy and Erdoğan Began In Lviv
Trilateral talks between President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres began in Lviv.
On August 17, UN Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Lviv. The UN secretary general arrived in the Ukrainian city to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Erdogan. The meeting with the presidents is scheduled for August 18. The main purpose of Guterres’ visit is to discuss the latest developments at nuclear power plants in Ukraine, especially the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, and the resumption of agreements on exports of raw materials from Ukraine. The leaders will also talk about relations between Ukraine and Turkey. The UN claimed the necessity of the visit of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors to Zaporizhzhya. They could reach the plant from Kyiv, but Russia insists that any mission that would go through the Ukrainian capital is too dangerous. According to the Russian side, Kyiv deliberately shelled the power plants to draw international attention to them so that the plants would not fall into Russia’s hands. Once again, the Turkish side is trying to mediate the conflict.
