Crimean Citizens Defiant Despite Ukrainian Claims on the Peninsula
Johnny Miller | PressTV | These are the elegant streets of historic Sevastopol. Ukraine and NATO still claim this city and the rest of Crimea as part of Ukraine. That’s despite a 2014 referendum on joining Russia. Down by the Harbor, I wanted to know how people here felt about Ukrainian threats of taking this city back. ● A Russian fighter jet flies overhead, a common occurrence—perhaps returning from a combat mission in Kherson. Sometimes cruise missiles can be seen from the harbor, fired by the Russian Black Sea fleet based in the city. ● Soviet Leader, Nikita Khrushchev gave Crimea to Ukraine in 1954. Many see that as a historic mistake, not reflective of the views of locals. ● Russia and Ukraine continue to claim this city as their own. But one thing is clear: the vast majority of people living here want to be part of the Russian Federation.
