Permalink Africa’s Richest City Is Crumbling Under Chaos and Corruption

Johannesburg was built on gold. It’s now such a mess that homeless people direct the traffic. | The continent’s richest city was built on gold, but it’s now defined by chaos, crime and corruption more than ever. It encapsulates the wider collapse of basic services across South Africa. From a broken railway network disrupting trade to archaic sanitation that triggered a recent cholera outbreak near the capital, Pretoria, parts of the country increasingly look like a failing state.  At the heart of the dysfunction in Johannesburg is a governance crisis. Since the country’s governing national party, the African National Congress, lost control of the city in 2016, unstable coalitions have resulted in six mayors in four years. The current leader is a member of a party that holds 1% of the municipality’s 270 seats.

Permalink A closer look at vaccines and the lies Big Pharma continues to tell the public

Government data shows COVID-19 vaccines HARM the immune system – Facebook admits it was wrong to label it “misinformation” | In August 2022, an investigation into five months’ worth of official U.K. government data revealed that a Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) “booster” dose provides only a temporary boost before harming the immune system more rapidly than two doses of the coronavirus vaccine. This suggests that the COVID-19 vaccinated population is developing some new form of vaccine-induced acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (VAIDS).  When the investigation was shared by a reader on Facebook the same day it was published, the post was quickly removed and labeled as “misinformation.” The reader who shared the article disputed Facebook’s censorship, and the social media platform responded on Oct. 27 to admit that it was wrong to label it as “misinformation.” Facebook confirmed that the investigation was actually factual. The Facebook post is now back, complete with details about the report.

Permalink End game in the Ukraine war approaches with lightning speed

Gilbert Doctorow | Today [June 20, 2023] Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu made an announcement that has not yet been carried in Western media but which is of the most grave nature.  According to the latest intelligence reports, Russia believes that the Ukrainian armed forces now intend to cover their failed counter-offensive in the Donbas by using US-supplied Himars multiple launch artillery and UK-supplied Storm Shadow cruise missiles, possibly in the longer range domestic version, to attack the Crimea. If this happens, says Shoigu, Russia will consider both the United States and Britain to have fully entered the war as co-belligerents. And Russia will immediately respond to any such attack on its territory by destroying “the decision making centers” of the Kiev regime. This is a fairly transparent threat to “neutralize” their government apparatus and personnel, logically including President Zelensky.  The statement by Shoigu leaves little doubt that we are entering the final phase of the Ukraine war as a war limited to the geography of Ukraine, and are possibly heading into a wider war with unforeseeable consequences both for Europeans and (finally) for Americans.

Permalink Russian – A Trophy Language?

Grigory Borisovich Karasin (Карасин, Григорий Борисович) | The intellectually sophisticated Ukrainian Defense Minister Reznikov agreed to the dangerously stupid point of calling our Russian a "trophy language."  What about the last, first names, and patronymics of most of his colleagues in the Kiev team?  You should think, Comrade Minister, when you speak in public! Otherwise, there is no desire to discuss any serious issues with you and your likes.  How do your Western masters negotiate with you...? (Translation with: DeepL.com)

[Comment by] Maria Zakharova (Russian MFA)(Мария Захарова) | Grigory Borisovich, don't you expect too much? Forcing the Kiev regime to think is both late and useless. In order to think, you need intelligence, not a flash drive with instructions from Washington.  The entire Kiev leadership speaks Russian to each other. Everyone knows that. And all this nationalist pathos just because they didn't have and don't have any other ideology for the political process. They originally tried to build a new Ukraine on the principles of nationalism, and they fell into a Nazi spiral. (DeepL.com)

Permalink Let NATO fight, Russia is prepared – Lavrov

The Western bloc has committed to fighting Russia in Ukraine, the foreign minister said | Russia is prepared for NATO to continue to fight in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday. Several days earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg rejected any moves to “freeze” the conflict, despite mounting Ukrainian losses.  In an interview with Germany’s Welt am Sonntag published on Sunday, Stoltenberg declared that “peace cannot mean freezing the conflict and accepting a deal that is dictated by Russia.” Stoltenberg added that “only Ukraine can define the conditions that are acceptable,” an explicit endorsement of Kiev’s vow to drive Russian forces back to pre-conflict borders and seize the Russian territory of Crimea. 💬 “If NATO, through the mouth of Stoltenberg, once again declares that they are against freezing, as they say, the conflict in Ukraine, then they want to fight,” Lavrov told a press conference. “Well, let them fight, we are ready for this, we have long understood the goals of NATO in the situation around Ukraine, which have been formed for many years.”

‘We need Russia, and Russia needs us’ – former Reagan adviser to RT (RT.com) | The two countries “should go and find a way to get back to discussing something else besides war,” the former adviser insisted, referring to the conflict in Ukraine. Russia has described the fighting in the neighboring country as a “proxy war” waged by the Americans and their allies against Moscow. “It’s a lot easier and a lot cheaper [to talk] than to use weapons,” the 92-year-old added.

Professor Maiken Nedergaard receives the prestigious medical Anders Jahre Award 2023 for her ground-breaking brain research which has led to the discovery and description the brain’s cleaning system, the glymphatic system. With the award comes a grant of NOK 1 million. | While we sleep, the brain is busy cleaning up the waste matter that accumulates during activity. This process is a so-called waste clearance system, and it is known as the glymphatic system. The system makes sure the brain cleans itself by removing waste matter in the form of proteins. If the proteins are allowed to accumulate and stay in the brain, they can lead to reduced brain cell function and increased risk of dementia.  Professor Maiken Nedergaard from the Center for Translational Neuromedicine at the University of Copenhagen, who first discovered and described the system in 2012, has spent the past years exploring the system in depth. Her research has changed our understanding of how the brain works and what goes wrong when we get sick, but also how we may be able to provide better treatment in the future.  Now she receives the prestigious Anders Jahre Award for Medical Research honouring outstanding international research. It is awarded once a year at a ceremony at the University of Oslo.

Permalink 'Black Day for Norwegian Nature' as Oslo Plans to Open Its Waters for Deep-Sea Mining

Several studies have revealed the presence of metals ranging from copper and zinc to rare earths on the shelf, promising a lucrative business for the Norwegian government. However, critics say it runs contrary to the country's environmental commitment and may ruin its "green" image abroad. | Norway's Labor-led government has proposed opening the country's waters to deep-sea mining despite fierce opposition from environmental campaigners, political parties and even fellow European countries.  The small country with 5.4 million inhabitants was propelled to immense wealth by its vast oil and gas reserves, which helped fill its Petroleum Fund which at more than $1 trillion ranks as the world's largest sovereign fund. Its position in Europe was cemented further after the EU's recent sanctions campaign against Russian energy, which effectively robbed the continent of a major provider, while clearing a lion's share of the market. Norway even came even under fire when it was suspected of profiteering from the energy crisis that gripped Europe.  Now, Oslo seeks to shift from a reliance on hydrocarbons to new sources of economic activity, tapping into the high demand to transition from fossil fuels. According to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, there are large mineral resources on the Norwegian continental shelf, including several million tonnes of copper, zinc and cobalt, which could potentially mean large revenues for Norway.

Permalink Work to identify Ukrainians responsible for Kakhovka dam blast under way

The head of the Russian Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin said that investigators and forensic experts have already examined the scene | The Russian Investigative Committee is working to identify Ukrainian officers, who are responsible for the attack on the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant (HPP), the head of the Russian Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin, has told TASS in an interview.  On the morning of June 6, the Ukrainian military launched a missile attack on the Kakhovka HPP, which resulted in the destruction of gate sluice valves at the HPP’s dam, triggering an uncontrolled discharge of water. Water levels in Novaya Kakhovka rose to 12 meters, but now the water is subsiding. There are 35 communities in the flood zone. People are being evacuated from flooded areas. According to the latest data, thirty-eight people have died and 115 have been hospitalized. The destruction of the hydropower plant has caused serious environmental damage with farmlands along the Dnieper River being washed away. Additionally, there is a risk that the North Crimean Canal may run low and become too shallow.  Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the strike on the Kakhovka dam as an act of deliberate sabotage by Ukrainian forces, adding that the Kiev regime should bear full responsibility for its consequences.

Permalink NATO state hosting training camps for coup in Belarus – The Times

“Hundreds” have reportedly joined the insurgency, which Minsk claims is backed by foreign nations | Belarusian exiles in Poland are training for a future armed insurrection in their home nation, The Times has claimed. The militants may also “play a key role” in the Ukraine conflict, according to the British newspaper.  The report on Sunday focused on a camp near the Polish city of Poznan operated by Bypol – the “group of former officers from Belarus’ security services” who fled the country following protests in 2020. Similar combat training sessions have been taking place in the NATO nation for months, with the number of recruits “in the hundreds,” Bypol’s leadership claims.  The Times described the recruits at the boot camp as common Belarusians, who want to topple the government of President Alexander Lukashenko in response to a “Stalinesque campaign of torture and detention [that] has all but silenced dissent” in the country.  The Belarusian government claime[s] it was closely monitoring Bypol’s activities, including their training camps located in Poland, Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania and the Czech Republic. 💬 “We know particular recruitment posts; know who is involved. We know the training camps, the identities of instructors, who teaches which parts of the course,” Belarus’ security chief Ivan Tertel claimed in April.  The group is using terrorist tactics to pave the way for an insurrection in Belarus and acts as a tool of foreign states, the senior official said. The same masterminds “are the driving forces in terms of geopolitical problems that our neighbors have,” he added.

Permalink Britain may become first country to "confiscate" Russian assets

New laws would reportedly allow maintaining sanctions on frozen money until Ukraine is compensated | The UK has introduced legislation that would allow for the retention and liquidation of confiscated frozen Russian assets, setting a precedent among Western countries, British media reported on Monday. The new law will allow the British government to keep its sanctions in place until compensation is paid to Ukraine, thus introducing a way for seized Russian money to be handed over to Kiev. According to media reports, the law will ensure that frozen assets belonging to the Russian state and individuals can be seized, making the UK the first European government to take such a step. “Through our new measures today, we’re strengthening the UK’s sanctions approach, affirming that the UK is prepared to use sanctions to ensure Russia pays to repair the country,” British foreign minister James Cleverly said.  Many Western governments, including Switzerland have so far refrained from confiscation of Russian funds despite increasing pressure from the US and the EU. There is fear that it would set a precedent for Western assets held overseas to also be seized and thus jeopardize investor confidence in the European banking system.

Permalink ‘The world will be different’ when the Ukraine conflict ends – Lavrov to RT

Russia will trust nobody else to guarantee its security once the goals of the special military operation have been achieved, the foreign minister said | By the time the conflict in Ukraine is resolved, Kiev will have accepted the loss of its former territories, and Western-led globalization will be dead, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told RT Arabic on Friday. Speaking on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Lavrov described the West’s proxy war with Russia as 💬 “a geopolitical conflict,” in which the US was attempting to eliminate a powerful competitor and “preserve its hegemonic position by all means.” “The attempt is futile, and we all know this,” Lavrov stated, adding that Ukraine and its backers will be forced to accept new “concrete realities” before a ceasefire is reached. Firstly, Kiev must accept that any potential peace agreement will need to take into account the loss of the Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye Regions, which voted to join the Russian Federation last year. Before sending its military into Ukraine, Moscow offered more generous terms, and Lavrov warned on Friday that 💬 “the longer they put off talks, the more difficult it will be for them to reach an agreement with us.” Ukraine and its European backers have admitted that the 2014 and 2015 Minsk agreements – under which Kiev promised to grant limited autonomy to Donetsk and Lugansk – were a ruse to buy Ukraine time to prepare for war with Russia. This situation will never be repeated, Lavrov told RT. 💬 “We won’t be prepared to let security guarantees be based on more pledges and promises or even documents the West may offer us,” he said. “We must guarantee our national security on our own.” “We fully understand that we can only rely on ourselves and build relations only with countries open to an equal and mutually beneficial partnership,” Lavrov continued. “This is not what we see in the West these days.” Lastly, Lavrov declared the era in which the US and its allies control the institutions of globalization – primarily development banks and multilateral organizations – will come to a close.

Permalink Putin reveals details of draft treaty on Ukrainian neutrality

The Russian president has shown the documents from the failed peace negotiations with Kiev | Moscow and Kiev agreed on security guarantees and the general terms of Ukrainian neutrality during peace negotiations in March 2022, but Kiev then abruptly discarded the documents its delegation had already signed, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday.  During a meeting with a group of African leaders in St. Petersburg, Putin showed for the first time the draft documents that were being discussed by the Russian and Ukrainian emissaries in Türkiye more than a year ago. According to Putin, a document titled the Treaty on the Permanent Neutrality and Security Guarantees for Ukraine had been signed by the Ukrainian delegation. The draft stipulates that Ukraine must enshrine “permanent neutrality” in its Constitution. Russia, the US, Britain, China, and France are listed as guarantors.  An addendum to the draft, also shown by Putin, outlines both Russian and Ukrainian proposals regarding the size of Ukraine’s standing army during peacetime, as well as its equipment. Moscow proposed to cap the number of military personnel at 85,000 and the number of National Guard members at 15,000. Kiev, meanwhile, proposed that its Armed Forces have up to 250,000 troops.   “Where are the guarantees that they will not walk away from agreements in the future?” Putin said. “However, even under such circumstances, we have never refused to conduct negotiations.”

Western politicians should know that by supporting Kiev they’re aiding “de-facto murderers,” spokesperson Dmitry Peskov says | Any persons threatening to kill Russians are enemies who should be and will be punished for doing so, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov has warned.  On Sunday, Peskov was asked by channel Rossyia 1 to comment on the words of Mikhail Podoliak, a top adviser to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who said last week that Kiev’s long-awaited counteroffensive would be “the most brutal advance with the maximum killing of Russians on this route.” “That’s what our enemies say, and we have to fight them. You can’t threaten the Russians with murder. Russians should punish [them] for this, and we will do so,” the Kremlin spokesperson pointed out. He noted that Podoliak was “not a pioneer” in this regard, as the chief of the Ukrainian military’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) Kirill Budanov and members of the country’s Security Council have also “repeatedly talked about their desire to kill as many Russians as possible.”

Permalink Anglo-Saxons control collective West – Moscow

The US and the UK strong-arm their own followers, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has claimed | London and Washington run the show in the “rules-based world order,” trying to dictate policy to their own allies as well as countries outside the West, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told RT on Friday. Russia fully understands that building relations with other countries needs to be based on mutual benefits and equal partnerships, Lavrov said in an interview with RT at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
💬 “This is not what we see in the West these days. The Anglo-Saxons are basically running the show, controlling the rest of the collective West. They are using the current situation, which they created through Ukraine – this war against Russia – to remove competition,” Lavrov elaborated. “They see us as a competitor, they see China as a competitor. Their doctrinal documents clearly state that. But they are also removing their competition in continental Europe. It’s obvious. The economic and social processes in Germany are grim. Other countries are not much better off,” the Russian foreign minister added. The only Western state benefiting from the current situation is the US, Lavrov claimed, “and the UK is always somewhere around, helping America reach its selfish goals.”

Germany has no more money for EU – finance minister (RT.com) | Lindner explained that the EU has maxed out its long-term budget through 2027, largely as a result of the bloc’s lavish aid packages to Ukraine. According to the latest figures from Brussels, the EU has given Kiev €72 billion ($79 billion) in economic, military, and humanitarian aid since Russia’s military operation in Ukraine began last February. Despite this unprecedented outflow draining its coffers, the European Commission is reportedly readying an additional €72 billion financial aid package to keep the Ukrainian economy limping along to 2027. According to Lindner, the commission will release a report next week asking member states for more money to cover the bill.

Permalink Israel to sell tanks to ‘European country’

Israel to provide the Ukro-nazis with tanks | Merkava vehicles worth “millions of shekels” may replace NATO panzers sent to Ukraine. Israel is negotiating the sale of older Merkava tanks to two unnamed countries, one of which is in Europe, the Defense Ministry in West Jerusalem revealed on Thursday. The deal is the first of its kind and is expected to come through within the next three months, if approved by the US.  According to the outlet YNet, the deal involves around 200 “orphaned” tanks retired from active service and gathering dust at maintenance depots. The Defense Ministry had intended to dismantle them and sell them for scrap iron before the escalation of hostilities in Ukraine last year drastically changed the situation on the global weapons market. Israeli inspectors checked on the tanks and found them “serviceable enough to be sold.”

Permalink Britain and the EU engaged in a fight over Abramovich's money

Elena Panina (Елена Панина) | The £2.3 billion from the sale of the Chelsea soccer club promised to "victims of the war in Ukraine" is in limbo because of the European Union's demands on how exactly the money should be spent, the British press complains. The EU insists that the money should go directly to Kiev and not to those "affected by the conflict." That was the wording, according to sources, in the agreement between Roman Abramovich and the British government. The logic here is simple. Sufferers can be financed from within the government - by paying them from the budget for housing, medical insurance, employment advice, kickbacks, etc. Moreover, Britain historically does not like to give away what it has gained by robbery. Spending money in Ukraine would put the EU in an advantageous position. In this case, the money can go for the purchase of equipment, building materials, consultations, and kickbacks, which cannot be controlled in London. So a not inconsiderable sum is lying unused on a frozen account for the second year in a row. Which also benefits Britain - the interest is coming in. And Russian business was warned: you'll be swallowing dust. Neither investing in British soccer nor demonstratively donating Apple to the Nazis will help in such matters. In short, Abramovich will never see this money again - and neither will Ukraine. British tradition is a strong thing. (Translation with: DeepL.com)

Permalink West keeps resisting fair inquiry into Nord Stream sabotage — Russian diplomat

On September 27, 2022, Nord Stream AG reported "unprecedented damage" that took place on three lines of Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines | Western countries keep utterly resisting a transparent international investigation into the sabotage attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines, Minister-Counselor of the Russian Embassy in the US Andrey Ledenev said on Wednesday. 💬 "It is also useful to ponder the reasons why the collective West stubbornly refuses to launch a transparent and objective international investigation under the auspices of the UN Security Council into the terrorist attacks in the Baltic Sea. As well as to clarify the role of the United States in the incident with the pipelines, with Washington being the key beneficiary of the reshaping of the European energy market," he said, adding that high-ranking US officials have never even tried to hide their hostile posture towards Nord Stream and bluntly threatened Russia’s gas infrastructure.

Dmitry Medvedev (Дмитрий Медведев) | Two good morning considerations: 1. Yesterday, the President of Russia spoke of the need for a demilitarized (sanitary) zone for the security of our country. Given the enemy's decisions to supply the Kiev regime with increasingly long-range weapons, such a line should run along the borders of Lviv (Polish Lemberg) to play a real protective role. Then these would be the new secure borders of what used to be called "country 404." 2. If we proceed from the proven complicity of Western countries in the undermining of the Nord Streams, then we have no restrictions, even moral ones, to refrain from destroying our enemies' cable communications laid on the bottom of the ocean.
