Permalink Climategate scientist 'hid flaws in data', say sceptics

Climategate intensifies: Jones and Wang apparently hid Chinese station data issues. The "climategate" controversy intensified last night when the senior British scientist at its centre, Professor Phil Jones, faced fresh accusations that he attempted to withhold data that could cast doubt on evidence for rising world temperatures. The charges follow an analysis of the emails hacked from the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit, of which Professor Jones is the director.

The London Times is reporting: “The chairman of the leading climate change watchdog was informed that claims about melting Himalayan glaciers were false before the Copenhagen summit, The Times has learnt. Rajendra Pachauri was told that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment that the glaciers would disappear by 2035 was wrong, but he waited two months to correct it. He failed to act despite learning that the claim had been refuted by several leading glaciologists.” See the Times article here

Permalink Simulated volcanic eruptions to block sun

A geoengineering project to block the sun by simulating volcanic eruptions would be 100 times cheaper than cutting greenhouse gas emissions, climate change scientists said. A global plan to put man-made particles into the atmosphere to deflect the Sun's heat would rapidly lower global temperatures until cuts in carbon dioxide emissions took effect, they argued. -Completely irresponsible! Sheer lunacy!

Permalink Climategate gives lord of the sceptics plenty of ammunition -Video

The visit to Australia this week of Lord Christopher Monckton - the world's most effective global warming sceptic - couldn't have been better timed. Hot on the heels of the "Climategate" email leak, which called into question the "tricks" used to sex up the case for the war against global warming, have come back-to-back revelations tarnishing the reputation of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. GlobalWarming.org: EPA Suppresses Internal Global Warming Study. Examiner: The Silence of the Warmists: 'Who's defending UN IPCC's Pachauri? Gore? RealClimate.org? Hansen? Romm? EU? 'None of them have spoken out defending Pachauri': Climate skeptic websites, such as Marc Morano's Climate Depot, are monitoring the blogosphere for attacks on Rajendra Pachauri, head of the IPCC, who through a series of tone-deaf statements and inability to realise that the uncovery of a series of mistakes in IPCC reports is actually serious, topped by revelations of financial connections of his that have benefited from climate alarmism, is considered a candidate for unemployment insurance. They have trumpeted Andrew Weaver 's (a prominent climatologist and IPCC Lead Author) call for Pachauri's resignation, and Mick Hulme of East Anglia University's more measured statement about the possible need for new leadership, as signs of his imminent demise. They're looking in the wrong place. When a high bureaucrat is in trouble, what you need to look for is who's defending him.

A senior Canadian climate scientist says the United Nations' panel on global warming has become tainted by political advocacy, that its chairman should resign, and that its approach to science should be overhauled. Andrew Weaver, a climatologist at the University of Victoria, says the leadership of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has allowed it to advocate for action on global warming, rather than serve simply as a neutral science advisory body. Permalink Monckton in Australia

Monckton’s Tour of Australia – An Opportunity for Major Political Parties to Learn about Global Warming. It is very timely that Christopher Monckton (Viscount Monckton of Brenchley) is visiting Australia to deliver a series of lectures on the global warming issue starting in Sydney on January 27 and finishing in Perth on February 8. At the time of writing it appears unlikely that either party will make use of the opportunity. Why? The reason is that neither major party wants to be known to meet with an expert who is able to rebut, point by point, the claims that government action is needed and to explain that the correct policy response is to have the courage to do nothing because “global warming” is a non-problem. Permalink UN Climate Con is Ending: UN scientist admits fake data was used in IPCC report 'purely to put political pressure on world leaders'

Glacier scientist: I knew data hadn't been verified. The scientist behind the bogus claim in a Nobel Prize-winning UN report that Himalayan glaciers will have melted by 2035 last night admitted it was included purely to put political pressure on world leaders. Dr Murari Lal also said he was well aware the statement, in the 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), did not rest on peer-reviewed scientific research. In an interview with The Mail on Sunday, Dr Lal, the co-ordinating lead author of the report’s chapter on Asia, said: ‘It related to several countries in this region and their water sources. We thought that if we can highlight it, it will impact policy-makers and politicians and encourage them to take some concrete action. ‘It had importance for the region, so we thought we should put it in.’ WUWT: The scandal deepens – IPCC AR4 riddled with non peer reviewed WWF papers: Well it turns out that the WWF is cited all over the IPCC AR4 report, and as you know, WWF does not produce peer reviewed science, they produce opinion papers in line with their vision. Yet IPCC’s rules are such that they are supposed to rely on peer reviewed science only. It appears they’ve violated that rule dozens of times, all under Pachauri’s watch. + “Pachauri must resign – his position is untenable”.

Then let’s have a closer look at the character and motives of the man in charge of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), Dr James Hansen. Last year, he was described by his former course supervisor at NASA, Dr John Theon, as an “activist” and an embarrassment.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, for two decades the most important guide for the global community to the causes and consequences of the phenomenon, is facing a series of challenge over its practices, both from within and without. The latest comes as basic flaws have been exposed in a panel finding on thawing Asian glaciers that, while buried in the back matter of the panel’s 2007 report on impacts of warming, had become a prime talking point among campaigners calling for action to curb emissions of greenhouse gases. Planet Earth has warmed much less than expected during the industrial era based on current best estimates of Earth’s “climate sensitivity”—the amount of global temperature increase expected in response to a given rise in atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2). In a study to be published in the Journal of Climate, a publication of the American Meteorological Society (the early online release of the paper is available starting 19 January 2010; the link is given below), Stephen Schwartz, of Brookhaven National Laboratory, and colleagues examine the reasons for this discrepancy.

Written by two authors who were on the scene - Steven Mosher and Tom Fuller - Climategate takes you behind that scene and shows what happened and why. For those who have heard that the emails were taken out of context - we provide that context and show it is worse when context is provided. For those who have heard that this is a tempest in a teacup - we show why it will swamp the conventional wisdom on climate change. However, Rajendra Pachauri, the chairman of the IPCC, told the Guardian: “We have a very clear idea of what is happening. I don’t know why the minister is supporting this unsubstantiated research. It is an extremely arrogant statement.”

Permalink Primary United States climate centers now caught in data manipulation

'Smoking gun of U.S. Climategate': Weather Channel founder Coleman's TV special accuses NASA & NOAA of manipulating climate data. It has been revealed that a "sleight of hand" was used in the computer program that rated 2005 as "THE WARMEST YEAR ON RECORD.” Skeptical climate researchers have discovered extensive manipulation of the data within the U.S. Government's two primary climate centers: the National Climate Data Center (NCDC) in Asheville, North Carolina and the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) at Columbia University in New York City. These centers are being accused of creating a strong bias toward warmer temperatures through a system that dramatically trimmed the number and cherry-picked the locations of weather observation stations they use to produce the data set on which temperature record reports are based. The two investigators say the system has been distorted in other ways as well.

First drilling tests under Fimbul ice show near freezing. No sign of melt; unlike thaw on Antarctic Peninsula. Sensors lowered through three holes drilled in the Fimbul Ice Shelf showed the sea water is still around freezing and not at higher temperatures widely blamed for the break-up of 10 shelves on the Antarctic Peninsula, the most northerly part of the frozen continent in West Antarctica. "The water under the ice shelf is very close to the freezing point," Ole Anders Noest of the Norwegian Polar Institute wrote in a statement after drilling through the Fimbul, which is between 250 metres and 400 metres (820-1,310 ft) thick.
