Permalink U.N. says ‘Food Shortages are essential to creating cheap slave labour’

In 2008, an article touting the benefits of world hunger for creating a cheap, motivated workforce was published on the United Nations’ website. The article resurfaced recently on Twitter and went viral; it was promptly taken down by the U.N. within 24 hours | The crux of the article is that the elite class has a distinct motivation to not end world hunger, because if everyone is well-nourished, there may be no one willing to provide cheap labour and slave away at some of the most physically demanding and unpleasant jobs on the planet.  While the U.N. claimed the article was satire, its author denied that it was a satirical piece and said it was intended to raise awareness that some people benefit from the existence of hunger in the world.

Permalink Marseille, Faroes, Shetland: Who is Cutting the Underwater Internet Cables?

Elena Panina/Елена Панина | After the sabotage of the Nord Streams, the perpetrators of which Sweden, Denmark and the FRG together cannot be found despite an exhaustive set of data on the movements of US, British and Polish navies in the area, it has been suggested that this is just the beginning of a "communications war". And here's the confirmation.  On the night of 19 October, fibre optic highways were cut in at least three locations in the Marseilles area. In addition to the disruption on the Marseille-Lyon, Marseille-Milan and Marseille-Barcelona routes, international traffic towards Australia and South-East Asia was affected. The affected provider turned out to be Free 1337. It has published pictures of what has been labelled as "professionally cut cables".  In April, four fibre optic lines of the same ISP were affected near Paris. In addition to Free and its backbone provider SFR, a dozen other providers were also affected. They are now routing traffic via alternative routes, leading to increased delays. The difference between April and October is that it's not internal French traffic that's now affected, but external traffic.  On the same day as the damage to cables near Marseille, the Shetland Islands were left without communication. Mobile phone, internet and landlines are working intermittently there and there are problems with cashless payments in shops.  Last week another cable connecting the Shetland and Faroe Islands was sabotaged. No one has yet been blamed for the sabotage, but according to local authorities "it is unlikely that two such problems occur at the same time".  You don't have to be a state to stage such a sabotage. It could be rival ISPs and other private entities interested in cutting off or slowing down communications in a particular direction. For example, to deal with exchanges. Permalink EU Wants to Steal Russian Assets to Finance Ukraine

EU leaders have instructed the European Commission to prepare proposals on ways of using frozen Russian assets to rebuild Ukraine, Russian media reported on Friday. The statement comes as EU leaders wrapped up a two-day summit in Brussels.

💬 “We have to talk about the use of [frozen] assets that we have – Russian [frozen] assets. We have over €300 billion ($292 billion) of [frozen] assets and how we can use them in benefit of Ukraine,” Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said on Friday, as quoted by CNN.

Legally, the frozen funds still belong to Russia or its citizens. In order to spend those assets, the EU needs to find a way of confiscating them. According to media reports, EU leaders will discuss the possible confiscation of frozen Russian assets at a summit in Brussels in May. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU was looking to provide Ukraine with about €1.5 billion each month. The bloc’s finance ministers have been tasked with pulling together the money.

Permalink First Images of Nord Stream Damage Revealed (Video)

Swedish newspaper Expressen released the first underwater images of the ruptured Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline on Tuesday. The Russia-Germany gas line was critically damaged in an act of apparent sabotage last month | The video footage, shot 80 meters below the surface of the Baltic Sea, shows long tears in the seabed leading up to the blown-apart pipe. At least 50 meters of the concrete-reinforced steel pipe are missing, the Swedish newspaper reported.  The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines – which were built to deliver Russian natural gas directly to Germany – lost pressure abruptly on September 26, following a series of underwater explosions off the Danish island of Bornholm, within the economic zones of Denmark and Sweden.  Germany, Denmark and Sweden are conducting separate investigations into the blasts, with a preliminary report by Copenhagen Police on Tuesday stating that "powerful explosions" caused the damage. Swedish investigators reached a similar conclusion earlier this month, blaming the blasts on “gross sabotage.”

Following Russian Vladimir Putin’s statement that Türkiye is the most reliable route for transporting Russian gas to Europe, Türkiye and Russia are taking steps to start joint work for establishing an energy distribution center in the former’s Thrace region.

💬 “Thrace is seen as the most important place for this kind of a distribution center. We, with Putin, have instructed our respective energy ministries to start a joint work. This work will be done and a distribution center will be established in the most suitable place,” Erdoğan told journalists on his return from Kazakhstan on Oct. 14.

Erdoğan made these comments after his meeting with Putin who suggested that a major energy center can be created in Türkiye as the most reliable route for energy export to the European markets. [...] Ankara and Moscow have in-depth energy cooperation as the latter annually supplies around 65 percent of Türkiye’s hydrocarbon needs. Permalink Russia Won’t Accept The Outcome Of Nordstream Investigation Unless It Is Involved

Russia is hitting back after Sweden declared they would not share the outcome of the Nordstream investigation into who sabotaged the pipelines. Considering they are Russia’s pipelines, it makes sense Moscow wants answers | The pipeline is owned and operated by Nord Stream AG, whose majority shareholder is the Russian state-owned company Gazprom. It doesn’t make sense that the outcome of the investigation would be withheld from the owner of the pipeline, but this could be a simple way to cover it up or push Russia toward a response.  So far, Russia is demanding to be a part of the investigation or it is not willing to accept the outcome of Sweden’s investigation. Russia’s foreign ministry revealed on Thursday it had summoned the representatives of Germany, Denmark, and Sweden to convey its “bewilderment” over a lack of official reaction to a request for cooperation sent earlier this month by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, according to a report by RT.

Sweden explains rejection of joint Nord Stream probe | Stockholm has rejected a plan to set up an official joint investigation team together with Germany and Denmark to look into the explosions that damaged the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in late September, Reuters reported, citing a Swedish investigator. Permalink Putin Says Germany Putting NATO Before It’s Own People

Berlin has made a mistake by placing its obligations to NATO above the interests of the German people, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Now business people, the country’s economy and its citizens are paying for this choice, he told journalists on Friday.

💬 “Apparently, some kind of allied obligations have been placed to the forefront” by Germany “within the framework of the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance,” Putin said at a press conference after the Central Asia-Russia summit in Astana, Kazakhstan. “Is it right or wrong? I believe that it’s a mistake, and business, the economy, and the citizens of the Federal Republic [of Germany] are paying for this mistake, because it has negative economic consequences for the eurozone in general and for the Federal Republic in particular,” Putin pointed out.

He was answering a question about Berlin’s role in the Ukraine conflict, where it has been among key backers of Kiev. According to the Russian leader, German authorities “should decide for themselves what is more important: the fulfillment of some allied obligations as they see them, or ensuring the interests of their own people, their national interests.” (VIDEO)

Permalink Putin Offers to Ship Gas Through Undamaged Line in Nord Stream 2

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday offered to ship gas to Europe through an undamaged line in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, an idea that was quickly rejected by Germany | Putin said that one line of the Nord Stream 2 remained pressurized despite the attacks on both Nord Stream pipelines that occurred last month and caused gas to leak into the Baltic Sea. Both lines of Nord Stream 1 were damaged, while only one Nord Stream 2 line leaked gas after the explosions.  Putin condemned the Nord Stream attacks as acts of terrorism. “The act of sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 is an act of international terrorism aimed at undermining energy security of the entire continent by blocking supplies of cheap energy,” he said.  Putin also said that there are countries that stand to gain from the sabotage, including Poland and the US. The US tried to stop the construction of Nord Stream 2 for years, and President Biden threatened to put an “end” to the pipeline if Russia invaded Ukraine. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called the incident a “tremendous opportunity” to wean Europe off Russian gas.

Sanctioning Russia is no longer enough for the US, which has now switched to sabotage, the president claimed | The US orchestrated the blasts on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea, which delivered Russian natural gas to Germany, because they “obviously” benefit from it, President Vladimir Putin said on Friday.  Putin accused Washington of trying to pressure the EU into banning Russian supplies to “completely get their hands on the European market.”

💬 “But the sanctions are no longer enough for the Anglo-Saxons,” he said, using Russian shorthand for the US-UK transatlantic alliance. “They have turned to sabotage – it’s unbelievable, but it’s a fact – by organizing the explosions on the Nord Stream international gas pipelines,” the president stated.   “They de facto began the destruction of the common European energy infrastructure. Iran signed a memorandum of commitment to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization on Thursday as the SCO summit kicked off in Uzbekistan. The Islamic Republic is expected to be officially accepted as a member of the Eurasian political, economic and security bloc before the summit is through.

💬 "Work on a new, major agreement between Russia and Iran is in its final stage. [This treaty] will mark the transition of relations between our countries to a strategic level," Putin said, speaking alongside his Iranian counterpart President Ebrahim Raisi on the sidelines of the SCO Summit.

💬 "Interregional ties are developing. We are actively cooperating in the international arena, and on many [points] our positions are close, or as diplomats would put it, they coincide," Putin said.

💬 "We are serious about the development of bilateral relations. Our relations are not ordinary, they are of a strategic nature. Cooperation can continue to develop in the political, trade and economic, as well as the space and aerospace sectors," Raisi said.

The Iranian president expressed gratitude to his Russian counterpart for supporting the Islamic Republic's bid for membership in the SCO, and emphasized that not only Tehran but the entire organization would benefit from Iran's full membership in the bloc.
