Chilean-American blogger Gonzalo Lira, who went missing in the Ukrainian city of Kharkov a week ago, has appeared online on Friday, revealing that he had been held by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU). Speaking about his condition, the 54-year-old said that he was “fine physically,” but “a little rattled” and “a little bit discombobulated.” Lira made it clear that he was forbidden from revealing any details about what had happened to him in detention.

The Tornado battalion crimes case is a criminal case opened in connection with numerous grave crimes committed by the personnel of the Ukrainian volunteer battalion Tornado during the armed conflict in Donbas.

According to the Ukrainian Military Prosecutor’s Office, the battalion’s fighters practiced inhuman killings, torture and rape against civilians. In addition, one in four of the Tornado personnel was found to have a criminal record. The investigation received a large public and political resonance, and the trial was subjected to strong pressure from representatives of the Ukrainian volunteer movement

Eventually, some volunteers from the Tornado battalion were found guilty of criminal charges (kidnapping, sexual violence, etc.) but a report by Global Rights Compliance LLP, which was published under the aegis of the British Embassy in Kyiv called the absence of any charges of war crimes against them with such obvious evidence inexplicable. In addition, the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union expressed concern about the nationwide tendency to justify grave crimes by pro-Ukrainian formations.

I know many people who always spring to the CCP’s defense, no matter what the charge, on the assumption that it can’t be true, or that it can’t be all that bad, or that there’s a damn good reason for it. This reflex is driven by the Manichaean fantasy that China and the US are fundamentally at odds, that the US is way worse, and that any bad news out of China comes from Langley.

That is a fantasy, for several reasons too complex to deal with adequately here. In any case, that tendency to carry water for the CCP is especially notable when it’s indulged by people who are rightly outraged when the US (or any other of the “democracies”) does what China’s doing, or has done, but, when China does it, either they go mute, or (wrongly) wax supportive of the crime.

There’s a whole lot more to say about what’s really going on in China, which I’ll revisit soon, in more detail. For now, it is enough to share a video provided by a Chinese student in Shanghai, who sent it to a colleague/friend of mine at NYU. This student is quite desperate to come back to the US, because the lockdown over there is horrible—as I think those who’ve conscientiously opposed the lockdowns in the West ought to agree. (Let’s see if they do.) If lockdown was a groundless and disastrous policy in the US, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, it’s no more justifiable when the CCP imposes it, and even worse, in light of their particular brutality (as evidenced in this video).

After Donald Rumsfeld testified on the Hill about Abu Ghraib in May, there was talk of more photos and video in the Pentagon’s custody more horrific than anything made public so far. “If these are released to the public, obviously it’s going to make matters worse,” Rumsfeld said. Since then, the Washington Post has disclosed some new details and images of abuse at the prison. But if Seymour Hersh is right, it all gets much worse. Hersh gave a speech last week to the ACLU making the charge that children were sodomized in front of women in the prison, and the Pentagon has tape of it. The speech was first reported in a New York Sun story last week, which was in turn posted on Jim Romenesko’s media blog, and now EdCone.com and other blogs are linking to the video.

Views on the CIA’s tactics break down sharply along ideological lines. Liberal Democrats are most disgusted with the agency’s actions, while conservative Republicans are most likely to defend it. Democrats who identify as moderate or conservative are more supportive of the program, joining majorities of independents and Republicans who say it was justified.

Those ideological poles at opposite ends of public opinion aren't that surprising. But the distribution of demographic groups between them is. According to various well respected journalists, including Seymour Hersh, the appalling video was recorded at Abu Ghraib, the notorious US torture dungeon in Iraq that made headlines roughly a decade ago, when the inhumane tactics being used at the prison were exposed. Sadly, it seems that the evidence released years ago was only scratching the surface. While the video has remained under wraps thus far, Hersh says it is only a matter of time before it comes out.

Physicians for Human Rights had not received any response from the US Federal Commission to their call to investigate the role of health professionals in CIA’s torture program, Deputy Director of the organization told Sputnik. ● US government has not responded to calls to prosecute doctors, who participated in CIA torture program, the Deputy Director of Communications for Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) told Sputnik News Agency. Earlier this week, PHR published expert analysis of CIA Torture Report and called for US Federal Commission to hold health professionals accountable. “Physicians for Human Rights have not received any response directly from the government, regarding our call for a federal commission to investigate the role of health professionals in CIA’s torture program,” Deputy Director of Communications for Physicians for Human Rights Vesna Jaksic Lowe said. Two former military psychologists, James Mitchell and Bruce Jessen, played a key role in the CIA torture program, according to the US Senate Select Committee’s report. The contractors received $81 million for developing an interrogation method to deal with Al-Qaeda detainees. Their potential violations include intentional harm on detainees, human subject research, failing to document evidence of torture and profiting from the torture program.

Photos allegedly depict soldiers raping and sexually abusing prisoners. ● Thousands of images depicting U.S. soldiers abusing prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan may be released this week following the Senate's 'torture report'. The images, part of a collection from 203 investigations into detainee abuse by U.S. military, are said to depict horrifying methods of torture. One photo reportedly shows an American soldier raping a female prisoner, while other pictures allegedly depict sexual assaults on prisoners with truncheons, wire and a phosphorescent tube. Some of the photographs were initially set to be released in 2009, but were blocked after President Obama backtracked, stating that it could pose a safety risk to troops on the ground. In May 2009, Obama claimed publishing the pictures would inflame anti-American feeling in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Wolfgang Kaleck represented Khaled El Masri, who was tortured by the CIA. ● A leading German human rights lawyer has called on prosecutors across Europe to “get active” and prepare to seize any CIA agents and US officials involved in torture who enter their territories. Wolfgang Kaleck said the US Senate committee report on CIA torture was giving new impetus to European resolve to hold those in positions of power responsible for the use of unacceptable interrogation techniques. “We’re preparing reams of dossiers, and demanding of prosecutors that they do the same for those who are named in the report and those known as the higher-ups who directed and conducted this system,” said Kaleck, the director of the European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) in Berlin. “If these people enter European territory, they need to know that they’ll run into severe trouble,” he told the Guardian. The CIA is bracing for what could be one of the most damaging moments in its history: a public airing of its "post-9/11" embrace of torture. ● The Senate intelligence committee is poised to release a landmark inquiry into torture as early as Tuesday, after the Obama administration made a last-ditch effort to suppress a report that has plunged relations between the CIA and its Senate overseer to a historic low point. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on Monday the administration welcomed the release of the report, but warned US interests overseas were at risk of potentially violent reactions to its contents. Despite months of negotiation over how much of the 6,000-page report will be declassified, most of its findings will never see the light of the day. But even a partial release of the report will yield a furious response from the CIA and its allies.
