What’s The Likelihood Of A Global Nuclear Arms Race?

Andrew Korybko | Russia and China are expected to reciprocally respond to the US’ potential development of new nukes and/or new nuke tests after it just let the New START lapse, which could be exploited by European and East Asian countries to develop their own nukes, thus emboldening some Muslim ones to follow suit. | The world is on the brink of a global nuclear arms race. John Mearsheimer argues that “nuclear weapons are a superb deterrent” since “no state is likely to attack the homeland or vital interests of a nuclear-armed state for fear that such a move might trigger a horrific nuclear response”, but this assumes that states are rational, which some EU ones arguably aren’t. Instead of stabilizing the world and preserving peace, a global nuclear arms race might destabilize it and spike the risk of an accidental nuclear war.

China backs Cuba amid tensions with US

Beijing has pledged to support Havana against President Donald Trump’s threats | China has expressed support for Cuba’s sovereignty after the US labeled the island’s socialist government a security threat. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, in Beijing on Thursday.

💬 “China firmly supports Cuba in safeguarding its national sovereignty and security, opposes unwarranted interference by external forces, and rejects any attempt to deprive the Cuban people of their rights to survival and development,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said after the meeting. (Lin added that China is ready to support Cuba) “to the best of its ability.”

Last month, the US abducted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro during a commando raid on his compound in Caracas. Maduro denied drug-trafficking and weapons charges when he was brought before a New York court. Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio have also made threats toward the left-wing governments of Colombia and Nicaragua. Trump hosted Colombian President Gustavo Petro at the White House this week, with both leaders describing the meeting as cordial.

EU trapped itself by rejecting Russian energy — Medvedev

The deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council added that Europe fell into critical dependence on American gas and would do whatever it is told | Europe has driven itself into a "monstrous trap" and ended up in critical dependence on the United States by refusing Russian energy supplies, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said.

💬 "In an anti-Russian fit of oligophrenic frenzy, the European Union does not even realize the monstrous trap into which it has driven itself. After all, the role of savior supplying energy resources will undoubtedly be secured by the Washington they now despise. Only the price for expanding its assistance will be incomparably higher than just money."

On January 26, the Council of the European Union formally approved a full ban on supplies of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the EU effective January 1, 2027, and on pipeline gas effective September 30, 2027. The regulation enters into force upon its publication on February 2, 2026.
