Declassified docs expose CIA conducted tests on Korean POWs
Declassified intelligence files reveal details about Cold War-era CIA behavioral programs, including interrogation research and psychological testing conducted on prisoners held in US custody. | Korean prisoners of war in the 1950s were reportedly subjected to early MK-ULTRA experiments while in US custody, according to a report published in The Intercept by North Carolina-based writer Garrett Kim, citing recently declassified CIA documents that confirm these activities for the first time. ■ Prior to this disclosure, the only widely cited reference to Koreans being used in such experiments appeared in journalist John Marks’s influential 1979 book, The Search for the “Manchurian Candidate.” Drawing on CIA records, Marks traced the origins of MK-ULTRA back to its earlier phase, known as Project Bluebird. In that work, he describes how, in October 1950, 25 unnamed DPRK POWs were selected as initial test subjects for “advanced” interrogation methods, aimed explicitly at “controlling an individual to the point where he will do our bidding against his will and even against such fundamental laws of nature as self-preservation.”

Gain of function research refers to the modification of animal viruses to increase their transmissibility in order to study their effect on humans. The ODNI is currently investigating the origins of the Covid-19 coronavirus, which Gabbard and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. maintain was created in a US-funded biolab in Wuhan, China.
